Gourmet Homemade Cannabutter

Yield: ¾ cup of gourmet Cannabutter | Prep time:  35 Minutes  | Cook time:  50 Minutes  | Total Time:  90 Minutes

Household ingredients needed:

  • One eighth (1/8) of one ounce of Cannabis flower – about 3.5 grams of flower.

  • 3 tablespoons of distilled water.

  • 2 sticks (1/2a  pound) of unsalted butter.

Tools needed for sous vide process:

Cannabutter is the bedrock of many mouthwatering cannabis-infused dishes. If done carefully, Cannabutter can be a tasty and well-measured dosage base for interesting and invigorating culinary adventures. If you prefer olive oil to butter, please see our homemade olive oil recipe here.

       Prep work (Decarboxylation process):

  • Fill a medium saucepan about halfway with water, then set the immersion circulator to 200°F.

  • Using your grinder, reduce the cannabis buds into small pieces and place them in the vacuum-sealable bag.

  • Add three tablespoons of distilled water, and seal bag completely using the vacuum sealer.

  • Once the temperature reaches 200°F, place the sealed bag into the water for 30 minutes, the bag should be rotated every few minutes to ensure that the cannabis remains submerged.

  • After 30 minutes, remove the bag from the heated water and immediately place in a bowl of ice water to preserve the terpenes by stopping the cooking process. Allow 10 minutes for cooling in ice water.

       Cooking & Mixing Phase:

  • Add the sticks off butter to a small or medium saucepan and slowly increase heat to melt butter.

  • Once butter is in the melting process, add the decarboxylated cannabis from the bag that has cooled for 10 minutes in ice water.

  • While stirring often, allow the cannabis and butter mix to simmer for 20 minutes.

  • After 20 minutes of stirring and simmering, Remove the saucepan from heat and allow an additional 30 minutes for the butter mixture to steep.

Final Step – Straining, Storage and Dosage

  • Use a fine-mesh sieve to strain the butter mixture into a shallow container. We recommend using the container that you will store the Cannabutter in, make sure it has an airtight lid. Helpful tip: Press on any cannabis solids in the sieve to make sure that you harvest as much of the Cannabutter as possible.

  • This recipe generally yields between 40 and 45 mgs of THC per tablespoon, assuming a 20% THC tier of cannabis bud. Please be mindful with your dish preparations, especially if you will be serving folks who don’t regularly consume cannabis.

  • Keep refrigerated, consume within 30 days. Enjoy!

Helpful hints and information about decarboxylation

What is Decarboxylation?

Decarboxylation refers to the process of heating cannabis and hemp to activate the cannabinoids within its buds, trim, leaves, or kief. Decarboxylating allows consumers to experience the plant’s unique and intoxicating effects by using its active components.

How does decarboxylation work?

The application of heat, over a period of time is what makes the decarb process work. Each cannabinoid and terpene has a different decarboxylation temperature, so full decarboxylation time can vary depending on the material.

Why is decarboxylation important?

Decarboxylation activates the plant’s most essential cannabinoids, tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), and cannabidiol (CBD). This is an extremely important process in the creation of edibles, tinctures, and other consumable cannabis products, because there is typically no heating process involved in the consumption of these product categories. Freshly harvested and un-decarboxylated cannabis flower contains an excess of cannabinoid acids that have little to no psychoactive benefit until processors decarboxylate them. Decarboxylating cannabis essentially flips a switch that converts cannabinoid acids into THC and CBD.
