CBN | A Tiny Slice of Heaven

Updated: Mar 4, 2023

The chances are pretty high (no pun intended) that you’ve heard of THC, you’ve also probably heard of CBD. Most people today have a general idea of what those two acronyms mean and what the compounds do to your body and mind. But there is a lesser-known cannabinoid that sports the three-letter acronym: CBN, and sadly you may not have heard that it works wonders as a sleep aid. CBN and the wellness products made with it can offer a level of relaxation you didn’t even think was possible, but for the purposes of this quick overview, we’ll stay focused on the sleep aid aspects for the most part. Surely, there is someone in your circle of friends and family that could meaningfully improve their quality of life by safely using a CBN sleep aid on occasion.

CBN (cannabinol) is a cannabinoid that is found in cannabis and is produced through the degradation of THC. CBN is a mildly psychoactive compound that is known for its sedative effects; hence, it is most commonly used as a sleep aid. The main chemical compounds found in CBN sleep aids work by interacting with the body's endocannabinoid system and other physiological processes to promote relaxation and improve sleep quality. The human body's endocannabinoid system is a complex network of receptors and neurotransmitters that is involved in regulating various physiological processes, including sleep. CBN and other cannabinoids found in sleep aids can bind to receptors in the ECS and influence the release of neurotransmitters that are involved in regulating sleep.

CBN sleep aid products often combine a variety of other natural compounds along with the CBN compounds as a way of balancing the concentration of supplements you’re ingesting at one time. The list of potential wellness compliments to a CBN sleep aid are too numerous to list in this piece, but we’ll give you a quick overview of some of the most common:

Terpenes: These are aromatic compounds that are found in many plants, including cannabis. Terpenes such as myrcene and linalool have been shown to have sedative effects and may help to promote relaxation and sleep.

Melatonin: This is a hormone that is naturally produced by the body to regulate sleep-wake cycles. Melatonin supplements can help to regulate the sleep-wake cycle by mimicking the effects of the naturally occurring hormone.

Valerian root: This is a natural herb that has been used for centuries as a sleep aid. Valerian root is believed to have a calming effect on the nervous system and may help to promote relaxation and sleep.

GABA: Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) is a neurotransmitter that is known for its calming effects on the brain. GABA supplements are commonly used as a sleep aid to help promote relaxation and improve sleep quality.

Clinical research on CBN is still limited, but mountains of anecdotal evidence and first-hand experience from myself, strongly suggest that CBN sleep aids can have a dramatic increase on the qualify of sleep one experiences. CBN compounds interact well with other compounds such as GABA, Valerian root and Melatonin to release a subtle cocktail of chemical reactions in your body that can lull you into one of the most peaceful, restful sleeps that you could ask for. Some people have reported waking up feeling drowsy or lethargic, but that may be a dosing issue and not necessarily directly related to the sleep aid. As with any medicinal or wellness supplement, be sure to read the label so you know what types of other compounds (if any) are present in the sleep aid that you are using.

If you or someone you know is having trouble sleeping and may be interested in trying new natural remedies, I highly recommend trying a low dose CBN sleep aid.
